Descending Into Darkness

By Tammy Derouin

We have reached a low which is only acquired by hitting rock bottom and then finding a way to dig even deeper.  The abuse of power by the current administration along with the support and cooperation of puppet government agencies is beyond comprehension. They blatantly give a wink and a handshake, creating a free pass, allowing the ruling party to operate above the law.

As an American, I expected the rule of law to apply equally among all Americans, regardless of position or rank.  But then again, I also expected our elected servants to follow the law of the land, the U.S. Constitution.  A system of checks and balances was created to prevent tyranny from resurfacing.  If one branch attempted a hostile overreach of power, the other two branches were supposed to push back, ending the encroachment.  Furthermore, I expected our government officials to faithfully uphold their oath of office and to defend and protect our Constitution.  Our Constitution alone cannot act and enforce the laws and ideals of freedom and independence.  It is up to the people to maintain the integrity of such a sacred document.

I expected more because the United States was an exceptional nation. The American people were once free and had a system of government based on law, not man.  The American people demanded truth and justice and didn’t take too kindly to those who lied and attempted to deceive them.  Evil was our enemy and the enemy, if not destroyed, was kept a world away.

A dark cloud, a fundamental transformation, began to overshadow our nation.  It chipped away at our foundation, eroding our basic human freedoms, our God given rights. Never before had the rights of man been declared so eloquently and fought for so fiercely.  So why did a strong and independent people begin to believe they were no longer exceptional?  Why did we turn on ourselves? Dependency replaced independence.   Fairy tales replaced truth.  Death replaced life.  We are descending into darkness.

There are moments in time which are seared into your memory.  They can be so shocking, so unbelievable that we will always remember where we were or what we were doing upon hearing the news.  Once the initial shock fades away, you begin to identify the event and the purpose it served.

No generation escapes their share of tragic or life changing events.  The Iranian hostage crisis was when I began to take an interest in the news.  I recall images of the failed attempt to rescue our people.  Although tragic, at least there was an attempt, by our president, to rescue them.  The inauguration of Ronald Reagan and the release of the American hostages from Iran were turning points.  The United States was not going to sit back and get run over by those who wished to destroy us. The attempted assassination of President Reagan was proof you couldn’t stop greatness. The Space Shuttle Challenger exploding moments after liftoff was a national tragedy.  But, it did not stop the American spirit.

The September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on American soil was a national tragedy and a wakeup call.  Unfortunately, we didn’t heed the warning.  Our government foolishly decided to pacify and embraced our enemy rather than destroy them. American power and greatness began to slip away.  An administration with much contempt for the United States and everything it stood for began to destroy us from within.  The Constitution was dismissed and the rule of law ceased to exist.

Sadly, we have watched American exceptionalism disappear.  We have watched an individual and his band of mob style thugs quickly destroy our country.  Scandal after scandal has been swept under the presidential rug.  Events which should have been outrageous and unbelievable have become just another, apparently acceptable, abuse of power.  The ability of one individual to create and allow so much anti-American sentiment and policy to settle into our country and to intentionally cause conflict, among the people, is criminal.

Don’t expect the rule of law to equally distribute justice for all.  We have witnessed many abuses of power, which have gone unpunished.  Almost eight years of criminal conduct has passed with little to no punishment for their crimes.  Should we really be surprised that the party successor, to the greatest American tragedy, would have been required to face charges?  The rule of law has been eliminated.  We are entering darkness.

Tragic events leave an unforgettable imprint in your mind.  Where were you the day the rule of law ceased to exist?  Where will you be when it will become self-evident that the Democratic Party seeks to steel and destroy the greatest treasure created by man, the United States of America?

“Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.”

Thomas Jefferson
