In sealing the deal, South Korean officials made new friends in the West Wing, while earning the respect of President Trump for being tough negotiators.More importantly, the South Koreans significantly increased their commitment to the alliance. This gives Trump a stronger hand to play in pressuring North Korea leader Kim Jong Un on denuclearization at the Hanoi Summit. The U.S.-South Korea alliance now represents a more committed, formidable deterrent to North Korean aggression.
